Malen, I think you are right about the future we have in play at this time. Our political and business and religious 'leaders' are all trying to get through their terms without having to take on any of the real work and transformation that must be done to save us from the implosion of capitalism, democracy and religious fundamentalism. if this continues, we as denizens of this planet are not likely to live in the age of aquarius, but rather the age of Mars/Ares--where strife, refugees, drought, disease, poverty and hunger become the dominant signs of the times. To avoid this we must transform our fear into positive energy and honor those who fear us to reduce the level of antagonism in the world. we in america need to excise the tumor of terror and fear of the past 8 years by addressing all activities done in our name so we can reclaim our good name within the community of nations, but even more importantly, so we can believe in ourselves again. If we think we don't have to do this to regain a balance of our spirit, just look at Germany today to realize how long and devastating it is to a culture to have been accused and condemned for waging a war of agression using terrorism and torture as the mainstays of the war. We have done this--we waged a war of agression against a nation nowhere near as peaceful as Austria, but nonetheless one which posed no reasonable imminent fear of attack on us. we used torture and intimidation through terror (including the use of cluster bombs and landmines) to try to create a veneer of justification. These facts are known not just by us, but by the whole world. Unless we face these facts and own up to our culpability to the world community we will have no moral standing, not just externally but internally as well. If we thought Viet Nam polarized this country, let's stand by and watch 10 years of the steady leak of photos of war crimes and see what that does to the fabric of this nation. how can we even think we can attend to the world economic crisis, the energy crisis, the food crisis, the health care crisis if we are in the midst of an identity crisis? We cannot push this aside-it is as destructive as supressed trauma to our collective psyche and can only be detoxified by the light of day and truth. We cannot create a bright future with so many shadows hanging over us. Malen, how do we convince President Obama, the House and the Senate that we need a Nuremburg Trials to cleanse us and allow us to go forward into the future with confidence and hope???
